Moon Fish appears in open-world and subterranean fishing sites with distinct time-based behavior. It can be caught in certain bodies of water only during nighttime, while in caves it can be caught at any time of day. Before progressing to Far Garden, the Moon Fish is the only fish available in the Office Sector; it can be caught from the fountain and the swimming pool there at night.

Moon Fish interacts with fishing equipment as a bait-like enhancement. When added to a fishing rod, it raises the chance of catching additional Moon Fish and unlocks the ability to catch a Pelagic Moon Fish, a related catch enabled by the Moon Fish modification.
