Official description

Soldier-medics grounded in traditions spanning more than two millennia, the Exsurgo are trained by the Order to operate under vastly more varied conditions than their conventional military counterparts.

Exsurgo must be ready to provide care under any conditions imaginable. A new conflict may see them confronted with crystalline claw wounds, psychic assault traumas, razor tentacle injuries and a panoply of other barely conceivable harms.

Until they have demonstrated this capacity, aspirants are designated as Refectio. Only when satisfied that a candidate has the requisite ability to both heal and defend under almost any circumstances, does the Princeps Medicus bestow the title 'Exsurgo'.

Overview

Medic is an Order soldier variant in Abiotic Factor, serving as a support unit for the Exsurgo. Like other Order soldiers, Medics can appear standing still or patrolling with other troops, and they are hostile to the player, robots, and other entities. Their main distinguishing behavior is their ability to rush downed Order soldiers and revive them when nearby allies are found on all fours.

In combat, Medic behaves much like a Grunt. It will try to keep some distance, but it also closes in to attack in melee when the player is close enough. Its melee swings are easy to avoid if the player steps back as the attack animation begins, and shields can block both its shots and its melee attacks. It is vulnerable to sharp damage, and stealthy headshots can kill it outright when the player has the necessary perks. A point-blank Scrapshot blast to the head can also often kill it in a single hit.

Medics wear helmets that can be knocked off, but only by hitting them in the head with a blunt or heavy weapon, or by shooting the helmet off. Certain weapon types do not work for removing the helmet. Helmets can also be removed even after the Medic is dead.

Its drops reflect its military role. On defeat, a Medic can drop 9mm Ammo, Military Electronics, a Military Pack, a Montese SMG, Money, a Cracked Shoulder Light, a Military M.R.E., and a Light Gun Repair Kit. It also yields harvestable remains, including a Human Skull and a Human Arm (Military). After completing the Security Sector, its harvestable drop table expands to include Exsurgo Armwraps, Exsurgo Tactical Plate, and Exsurgo Shinguards.

  • 9mm Ammo drops in quantities of 3, with an additional 3–5 possible.
  • Military Electronics has a 60% drop chance.
  • Military Pack has a 20% drop chance.
  • Montese SMG has a 15% drop chance.
  • Money and Cracked Shoulder Light each have a 10% drop chance.
  • Military M.R.E. has a 3% drop chance.
  • Light Gun Repair Kit has a 2% drop chance.

The Exsurgo are described as soldier-medics trained to operate under extremely varied and dangerous conditions. Their rank is earned only after proving they can both heal and defend under almost any circumstances, which fits the Medic’s battlefield role as a front-line support unit rather than a purely defensive specialist. Prior to the 1.0 release, Medic was the only Order enemy that did not have its own Compendium entry and codename.
