Official description

Legates of the Order achieve their command through a mixture of zealotry, combat victories, and sheer survival.

Although the Order conducts extensive intelligence gathering in advance of any operation, a Legate’s role frequently involves leadership under unexpected, if not extraordinary conditions. As such, those who earn the role are trusted with a high degree of operational independence.

Legates are among the Order's most fervent believers, and sometimes called 'Perfecti', in acknowledgement of their Cathar-derived traditions.

Overview

Captain is a named rank of Order combatant categorized as a Legate-class soldier who appears as a hostile humanoid creature. Captains are encountered patrolling, holding overwatch positions, or commanding small squads in the field. They form part of the Order’s leadership cadre—Legates who attain command through zealotry, battlefield success, and survival—and are granted a high degree of operational independence. Captains are hostile to allied entities, robots, and the player.

In combat, Captains wield a Talagi magnum-style revolver that deals substantially more damage than the standard Grunt armament; this makes them dangerous to lightly armored characters despite not being as heavily armed as larger foes. Their general combat behavior closely mirrors that of Grunts: they will try to put distance between themselves and the player, will attempt melee attacks when the player is within range, and will use ranged fire to suppress or damage. Their melee animations telegraph the attack, making those strikes straightforward to dodge if the player retreats as the animation begins. Captains can use shields to block incoming shots and melee attacks.

Effective approaches against Captains emphasize precision and exploit their vulnerabilities. High-damage sharp weapons delivered as sneak attacks, or Power Attacks with heavy blunt weapons aimed at the head, can often one-shot a Captain when prerequisites such as stealth perks are met. A Scrapshot fired at point-blank range to the head also frequently results in an instant kill. Shields complicate frontal engagement; flanking, stealth, and head-targeting are recommended to reduce incoming damage and conserve resources.

Captains drop a mix of common military salvage and rarer gear. Their helmet can be removed by striking the head with a blunt or heavy weapon or by shooting the helmet off; this works even if the Captain is already dead. Standard and notable drops include:

Harvested body parts obtainable from Captains include a Human Skull (100%) and a Human Arm (Military) (50%).

Captains are frequently fielded with close support: they commonly operate alongside Grunts and occasionally a Medic within a single squad. This makes isolated engagements preferable; encountering a Captain with backup increases lethality and reduces the effectiveness of straightforward headshots if backups suppress or flank the player.

Notable detail: the only Captain in the game found dead at Flathill is unique for wearing a full gas mask; all other encountered Captains wear half-masks that leave their eyes visible.
