Overview

Hive Larva are a family of related larval organisms cataloged as A299 A–D and are believed to originate from Anteverse 299. A portion of a Hive Larva population and their hive structure migrated into the GATE Cascade Research Facility after a destabilization of the Facility's perforation network. They now occupy an older, defunct mining sector of the Facility, where solid rock is cut by horizontal mineshafts and tunneled galleries; within this area they are most commonly encountered around designation IS-1076.

Hive Larva are associated with a larger hive entity and are thought to contribute physically to hive construction during a phase of their lifecycle. They communicate primarily through scent and other olfactory cues rather than vocalization or visibly coordinated signals. Their cognitive capacity has not been established and requires dedicated study; current records treat their intelligence as undetermined.

Individuals move slowly through tunnel systems and display a simple, direct behavioral pattern in the presence of Facility personnel. They wander the passageways at low speed but become immediately aggressive toward scientists on sight, moving to attack without prolonged warning. Their size is small compared to many Facility fauna, which affects both how they are engaged and the damage distribution from weapons.

Combat encounters with Hive Larva are low-threat in terms of durability. A single well-placed strike will often be sufficient to kill one, and most melee or ballistic hits anywhere on the body will dispatch them quickly. Their small stature can make landing blows more difficult; aiming for the face yields increased damage and speeds kills. Thermal or incendiary effects are effective — fire-capable tools such as the Thermal Mallet are recommended if available for rapid neutralization and to reduce the chance of missed strikes.

Hive Larva yield a small, predictable set of harvestable drops. Killing and harvesting a Hive Larva commonly provides Raw Larva Meat at a roughly 50% chance, and there is a minor chance to obtain a Larva Figurine (approximately 2%). These resources have been cataloged in Facility foraging records and are the primary known rewards for direct interaction.

  • Typical locations: defunct mining region of the GATE Cascade Research Facility, especially tunnels around IS-1076.
  • Behavior: slow wandering; immediate aggression toward scientists.
  • Communication: primarily olfactory/scent-based; participates in hive structural formation.
  • Combat: fragile — usually killed with one well-placed hit; face hits deal extra damage; small size makes them harder to hit.
  • Recommended tools: melee or ranged strikes aimed at the head; thermal/incendiary weapons (e.g., Thermal Mallet) increase kill speed.
  • Drops: Raw Larva Meat (50%), Larva Figurine (2%).
  • Research status: under-researched; intelligence and full lifecycle require further study.
