Alpha Peccary

The Alpha Peccary is a larger variant of the Peccary and is classified in the GATE Compendium as IS-0178-E, with the designation Thela (AG/PY). It is treated as a variant of the base IS-0178 containment subject, but the compendium notes that its increased size has led some researchers to argue for a containment space larger than 3x3 meters.

Alpha Peccaries are hostile creatures encountered in several outdoor and enclosed locations across the game. They can spawn in the center of the Wildlife Pens in Cascade Laboratories, in a garage on the left after crossing the dam in the Hydroplant, inside Village Den da'ko Yeer, and next to an Exor Cha on the road toward Dusk Reactor in the Reactors area. Because they appear alongside other dangerous enemies in some of these spots, they are best approached with caution rather than rushed.

In combat, the Alpha Peccary changes its attack pattern based on distance and whether the player keeps moving after engagement. At longer range, roughly 8–9 storage crates away, it uses a tackle attack that can be avoided by sidestepping. If the player is closer than that, it switches to a melee attack that cannot be dodged, though it can be blocked with a shield. If the player continues running after the initial engagement, it may follow up with a jump attack after 2–3 seconds; this can be avoided by maintaining distance and running sideways. In practice, the safest way to fight one is to avoid letting it close the gap, since its close-range melee attack is the most punishing part of the encounter.

Alpha Peccaries drop a useful set of harvestable materials:

• Peccary Alpha Skull — 100%
• Raw Peccary Chop — 100%
• Milk Sac — 100% of 1, with a 25% chance to get 1–2
• Raw Alien Drumstick — 50%

These drops make the creature a worthwhile target when farming meat and crafting components, especially since the skull is guaranteed as a trophy-like drop. The Milk Sac is also consistently obtainable, which gives the Alpha Peccary additional value beyond simple combat progression.

A few extra points are worth noting:

• The creature’s compendium entry can be unlocked by killing 500 Peccaries after obtaining all other compendium entries.
• The creature was first observed from a distance, which led researchers to underestimate its size.
• Its namesake is the peccary, the real-world animal, though the alien creature is considerably larger than the animal it resembles.
