Overview

Guard Grunt is an Order infantry creature encountered throughout hostile Order-controlled areas, especially in patrol routes, fixed guard positions, and around machine gun nests. They serve as the Order’s standard frontline soldiers and are trained for both close-quarters combat and theological indoctrination, making them the organization’s first, finest, and often final foot soldiers. A variant found in the Praetorium uses a different model and wields the Auto 10; this version is referred to as Grunt Off Duty.

Most Guard Grunts resemble one another closely, with black pants and no Military Pack or Order Helmet, setting them apart from some other Order personnel. In combat, they fight at range with their firearm, may throw grenades, and will switch to melee attacks if the player closes in. They are hostile to anything not affiliated with the Order, including aliens, robots, and the player.

Guard Grunts drop a useful spread of military supplies and ammo. Common drops include 9mm Ammo, Military Electronics, and occasionally a Military Pack, Security Pistol, Money, Cracked Shoulder Light, Military M.R.E., Light Gun Repair Kit, or Cloth Scrap. They can also be harvested for Human Skull and, sometimes, Human Arm (Military), making them one of the more recognizable human-shaped enemies for loot and crafting materials.

They are most dangerous when allowed to keep distance and fire repeatedly, but they are not especially accurate and must reload when their magazine is empty. Their melee attacks are easier to avoid if you back away as they begin the animation. Sharp weapons are effective against them, and headshots deal extra damage. Shields can block both their shots and melee attacks.

A few practical ways to deal with them:

  • Ranged weapons work well, since they often try to reposition away from the player.
  • Sharp weapons are effective, and headshots increase damage significantly.
  • Their melee attacks can be dodged by stepping back as the swing starts.
  • Shields are useful for absorbing both gunfire and melee hits.
  • Stealth attacks can kill them in one hit with a high-damage sharp weapon or a strong blunt weapon power attack if aimed at the head and supported by the proper perks.
  • Point-blank shots from weapons such as the 9mm pistol or other high-damage close-range options can also be lethal with a headshot, though the Scrapshot’s firing delay can make this less reliable.

Guard Grunts are functionally identical to the Half-Life HECU Grunt, which is a useful comparison for understanding their role as disciplined, heavily armed human enemies.
