Overview

The Mushroom Peccary is a hostile peccary variant found in the Mycofields and in Cascade Laboratories. It also appears during Spore Events, where it replaces normal Peccary spawns. Like other peccaries, it is tied to the broader family of pig-like alien creatures, but it has been adapted to the fungal environment and can be treated as part of the local mycelial ecosystem.

In combat, its behavior changes with distance. At longer range, it opens with a tackle attack that can be sidestepped. If the player is too close, it uses a melee attack that cannot be dodged, though a shield can block it. If the player keeps running after the initial engagement, it may follow with a jump attack after a short delay; this can be avoided by maintaining distance and moving sideways. In practice, the safest approach is to stay mobile, keep enough space to force tackle behavior, and avoid getting pinned in close quarters.

Its harvestable drops are especially notable for farming and cooking:

The creature is also used in progression and trading through its drops and related materials, and its compendium designation lists it as IS-0178-B with the Sanc (AG/IN) classification. The containment notes emphasize sterile storage conditions, daily checks for mycelial spread, removal of spores and blooms, reinforced walls and flooring, and remote feeding, reflecting how heavily it is associated with fungal contamination.

A few practical notes stand out when dealing with it:

  • It needs to be placed next to a source of Tainted Water and kept away from light to grow properly.
  • If placed next to a container, it consumes 750 mL of Tainted Water to grow 4 Carbuncle Mushrooms.
  • A single barrel supports 13 growths.
  • It can be traded with Marion for a Reinforced Hose.

The Peccary name comes from the real animal, and the Mushroom Peccary’s smaller namesake was based on an early distant sighting that led scientists to underestimate its size.
