Overview

Mushroom Carbuncle is an IS-0171 variant classified Sanc (AG/IN) and endemic to The Mycofields of Anteverse 2. The organism ejects a plume of toxic spores when approached and secretes a fungal growth that becomes edible to humans after cooking. Research into the creature emphasizes strict containment: all storage locations for IS-0171-B must be hermetically sealed, personnel handling live subjects must wear micro-grade, corrosion-resistant oxygen filters at all times, and equipment must be irradiated and decontaminated following GISP anti-hyphatic (antifungal) procedures.

Behaviorally, Mushroom Carbuncle is mobile and actively detects nearby players. It senses walking or running targets within a range equivalent to 3–4 storage crate widths and initiates an attack when such motion is detected. The creature does not respond aggressively to approaches made while the player is crouching, allowing stealthy movement past some specimens if careful. When it attacks, its primary offensive maneuver is a grab-type attack that cannot be dodged; this reach matches its sensing range and, on a successful grab, applies a large movement-speed penalty for 15 seconds.

Harvesting a defeated or neutralized Mushroom Carbuncle yields two guaranteed drops: Raw Carbuncle and Carbuncle Mushroom, each with a 100% drop chance. The mushroom produced by the creature is considered safe for human consumption only after proper cooking; raw or improperly prepared fungal tissue is associated with the organism’s toxic spore ecology and should be processed under controlled conditions.

Practical notes for interaction and containment:

  • Approach specimens while crouched when possible to avoid provoking the spore-ejection and grab attack. Crouch-stealth bypasses are effective within the detection envelope.
  • Maintain at least a 4–crate-width standoff if unprepared; the spore plume and grab reach activate at roughly that distance.
  • If grabbed, expect severe mobility impairment for 15 seconds. Prepare crowd-control or escape tools that function under slowed movement conditions.
  • In research or storage facilities, enforce hermetic sealing and PPE policies: micro-grade corrosion-resistant oxygen filters for personnel and irradiative decontamination of equipment per GISP antifungal protocols.
  • Harvested Carbuncle Mushroom must be cooked before consumption; handle raw material as biohazardous until processed.
  • The common name references a cluster of boils from bacterial infection, a descriptive comparison drawn from the creature’s bulbous, pustule-like appearance.
