Mountaineer
Overview
Mountaineer is a hostile Order soldier encountered in the game. It appears either standing still or patrolling with other Order troops and is aggressive toward other entities, robots and the player. Mountaineers carry a helmet that can be removed and wear military-style gear; they function as mid-tier human opponents that drop both equipment and salvageable human remains.
Combat against Mountaineers benefits from ranged engagement and head-targeted hits. They periodically try to create distance from the player, so using rifles or other ranged weapons lets you harass them while avoiding close-quarters exchanges. Their fired projectiles and melee strikes can be blocked with a shield.
Mountaineer-specific mechanics and loot:
- Helmets can be removed by dealing a head hit with a blunt or heavy weapon, or by shooting the helmet off; a helmet can be knocked off even after the Mountaineer is dead.
- Weapon and equipment drops from Mountaineers include a Patois Rifle (drops at 100% chance) and 5.56 ammunition. Ammo drop rates are given in two tiers: a guaranteed portion and an additional chance for more ammo (base 2 rounds guaranteed; a further 50% chance to drop 2–5 rounds).
- Other common component drops are
Kevlar Scrap (100% chance) and Military Electronics (60% chance). Light armor pieces and consumables have lower chances:
Cracked Shoulder Light at 50%,
Alpine Pack at 10%, Military M.R.E. at 2%, and
Cloth Scrap at 1%.
Harvestable biological and armor salvage:
Human Skull drops at 100% when harvesting the body.
Human Arm (Military) has a 50% harvest chance.
- Named Mountaineer armor salvage pieces each have a 10% chance:
Mountaineer Armguards,
Mountaineer Chestplate,
Mountaineer Leggings.
Practical tactics and notes:
- Favor precision headshots with blunt/heavy weapons or targeted fire to remove helmets for extra salvage or to expose the head to critical damage.
- Maintain distance and use cover while engaging multiple Mountaineers; they will attempt to back away, so kite tactics work well.
- Bring a shield when you expect mid-range encounters to mitigate both projectiles and melee attempts.
- Prioritize Mountaineers when you need rifle parts, kevlar components, or military electronics; they reliably yield these items more often than other Order grunts.
Mountaineers do not have a dedicated Compendium entry; they are treated in practice as part of the broader Triarii (Grunts) classification.
