Overview

Symphonist is a hostile creature classified in the game compendium as Thela (AG/IN). It is rarely observed and poorly documented; reports describe it as largely or completely sightless with a bedraggled, contorted form and morphic similarities to IS-0064. Symphonists rely entirely on sound to detect targets rather than vision and are commonly encountered in several late early- to mid-game facility areas and during Fog Phenomena.

In behavior and combat, Symphonists are highly durable and resistant to certain attack types; electrical weapons have no effect on them. They are aggressive toward anything that is not another Symphonist or a Composer and will attack immediately on detection or when provoked. When damaged, a Symphonist spawns several stationary illusions of itself. These illusions do not move and will vanish if damaged, while striking the real Symphonist yields a critical hit. The real Symphonist may perform a charging melee attack, swipe with claws, or perform a rolling charge; it can also pick up and throw the player a short distance (this throw does not directly deal damage but can cause hazardous positioning near pits or high ledges). Some other enemy types will flee when they encounter a Symphonist.

Recognizing the real Symphonist among its clones is possible by several cues: checking for collision by attempting to run into an instance, looking for physical projectile sticking (for example, bolts from a Makeshift Crossbow), watching for persistent visual status effects (illusions do not show these), or observing animation timing — the real Symphonist’s animation is often out of sync with the copies, while copies animate in perfect unison. Later-game equipment eases identification: the Motion Sensor ability from the Cascade Armor Set highlights the genuine Symphonist, and the Exor Spirit summoned by the full Exor Armor Set will target only the real creature when illusions are active.

Symphonists appear in fixed spawns and patrols across multiple locations, often after key story progression. Confirmed locations include alleys and interiors in Flathill (e.g., Flathill Syrup Co. alleyway and around the Flathill Syrup Co. building’s final elevator), multiple floors and corridors of the Courthouse, Office Sector corridors and near the data farm charging station, Manufacturing West roads and rooms leading to The Train portal, Cascade Laboratories near the Particle Lab and Collider Access Tunnel tram, sections of Hydroplant (vehicle ramp, electric room, and docks corridors), and around the Khio Photo Frame in the Reactors. Symphonists can also spawn in fixed facility locations during Fog Phenomena.

Loot and interactions: Symphonists consistently drop a Symphonist Head and Porcelain Shards (with varying stack sizes), and have a chance to drop Porcelain Keys, Organs, and rare Porcelain Tablets. A petrified Symphonist specimen is present in the Temple of Stone secret room ceiling. Symphonist heads and other drops are used in crafting, trading, and progression: Symphonist-related items can be traded with Marion in exchange for a Porcelain Key.

Practical tips and tactical notes

  • Prioritize finding the real Symphonist before committing to high-damage bursts; damaging an illusion wastes resources. Use collision checks, projectile markers, status-effect visibility, or animation desynchronization to identify the genuine foe.
  • Equip or acquire Motion Sensor or the Exor Armor Set effects if you expect prolonged fights with illusions; these make distinguishing and finishing the real Symphonist trivial.
  • Avoid relying on electric-based weapons; they do not affect Symphonists. Use high physical damage and crowd-disruption tools instead.
  • Be cautious of arena layout: Symphonists can throw the player, so fight away from ledges, pits, or environmental hazards.
  • When facing multiple enemies, note that some foes will flee from Symphonists; use that to your advantage to separate threats or control battlefield flow.
