Overview

Shadowgate is the name given to the GATE Intrados Containment Facility portal world, located within Finland and controlled by GATE since the late 1980s. The site was repurposed as a central hub for Gatekeeper operations because of its transpositional properties and access to secured infrastructure; Gatekeepers played a significant role in resolving jurisdictional matters surrounding the Intrados Facility. Precise records of Entities immured at Shadowgate or of classified activities inside the facility are restricted to Keystone clearance or higher and may be requested through Section Three at Keystone, though access is unlikely.

The area surrounding Shadowgate includes a large, uneven forested approach with ponds, ruins of an old building, and floating cubes of stone that emit high levels of radiation. Those floating cubes are modeled as graphite moderator remnants from a graphite-moderated reactor type. The portal world contains both outdoor and fortified indoor zones: an outer defensive wall with three Hardlight entrances and machinegun turrets, the interior of the abandoned facility, and a main containment chamber where most Gatekeepers concentrate. Shadowgate is notable for being the first Portal World to link directly into another Portal World (Far Garden) rather than cascading back to the main world.

Shadowgate is populated by all ranks and variants of Gatekeepers, including Witches, and several other enemy types. Notable enemy roster includes Neophyte, Mystagogue, Witch, Chieftain, and Jotun. Gatekeeper Witches patrol the forest, the abandoned facility, and the road to Intrados; groups of Witches can be found in scripted encounters (for example, a trio dancing around a fire outside a hut). Jotun units man some elevated positions and turrets. The main containment chamber contains five destructible Containment Devices shielded by Hardlight; these devices must be disabled to proceed. An Email Terminal is located in an office on the right side of the main chamber. Players may nullify the protective Hardlight layers on the devices and then enter the rift portal at will, ignoring remaining Gatekeepers if they choose.

Named NPCs present include Albert Cahn, who appears both outside near the entrance portal and inside Shadowgate and disappears after all Containment Devices are broken, and IS-0117 (reported as not dangerous in this portal world). The world also contains renewable and placed resources: large quantities of Cement Bags often on wooden platforms, placed 12g Buckshot as world loot (not enemy drops), and rare forageable bushes whose locations randomize between visits. A Natural Beehive can spawn up a tree on a steep hill in the forest.

Practical notes and strategy:

  • Prepare for sustained combat: bring medical supplies, bandages, food, and water; hardlight-sealed entrances require time to open (expect at least 7 s to cycle necessary seals).
  • Expect heavy Gatekeeper presence including Witches and higher-ranked Gatekeepers; fights in the main containment chamber are likely and should be anticipated.
  • The outer wall has three Hardlight entrances; front entrance is the most heavily defended and contains built-in machinegun turrets manned by Witches and a Jotun. East and West walls are less defended but monitored by Chieftains.
  • Turrets outside and integrated into the wall are lethal at range; approach with cover and recon to avoid being seen first.
  • Inside the facility, most Gatekeepers concentrate around the main containment chamber; other areas can be explored more freely but watch for a single Jotun placed at the top of a stairwell in the west wing.
  • Hardlight barriers upstairs can provide usable cover even when not required to be nulled; prioritize nulling the five Containment Devices to unlock the rift portal.
  • Radiation hotspots around floating graphite cubes pose a hazard when foraging; exercise caution when collecting resources near anomalous stone clusters.

Shadowgate combines high enemy density, environmental hazards, and secured Hardlight systems with rare placed loot and renewable resource locations, making it a high-reward but well-defended portal world for properly prepared teams.
