Overview

Dunkeltaler Forest is a Portal World location accessible through a portal on the path to Robotics in Hydroplant. Activating the portal requires a Neutrino Mapper, which can first be obtained from Voussoir. The area represents a remote satellite base in the Swiss Alps and is tied to the Alpen Signal Observatorium, a research facility founded in Dunkeltaler, Switzerland in the early 1970s.

The GATE compendium entry describes the Alpen Signal Observatorium as an advanced astronomical research center that was abruptly shut down at the end of the 1980s, then reopened a few years later with reduced operations and only one staff member at a time. Its exact research goals were never made public, which fits the location’s isolated and partially repurposed feel.

After arriving, the forest begins spawning several roaming hazards and points of interest close to the player. These make exploration feel more unpredictable than in many other Portal Worlds, especially when moving between the forest paths and the observatory grounds.

  • Red Wisps explode on contact.
  • Green Wisps teleport the player to a random location on the map on contact.
  • Blue Wisps create an anti-gravity effect around themselves similar to the Gravity Dampener.
  • A phone booth can appear shortly after arrival and will randomly spawn and move around the forest.
  • The area contains large quantities of Cement Bags, often placed on wooden platforms, making it the first Portal World where Cement Bags appear as lootable resources and a renewable source for them.

The observatory itself has blocked-off eastern and northwestern paths due to debris, limiting access to parts of the site. The area can also have occasional flyovers by spacecraft, adding to the impression that Dunkeltaler Forest is an isolated research outpost with unusual activity still lingering around it.
