The Moving Box
Overview
The Moving Box is a wandering creature-class abiotic factor that appears at unpredictable locations throughout the game world. Designated IS-0247 and classified Sanc (AV/HL/IN), it is hypothesized to be an artificial creation and is notable for accompanying and mimicking certain upright bipedal organisms. It was first identified at the GATE Cascade Research Facility after the TransRecon expedition to Anteverse 1 and reportedly followed the team back with them. Attempts to contain or confine The Moving Box have failed; conventional architecture only delays it for hours and known perforation-dampening systems do not impede its movement. Its interior volume exceeds its external dimensions, indicating non-Euclidean internal workings that allow it to store items indefinitely.
The Moving Box functions primarily as a mobile storage unit with a fixed inventory capacity of six slots. While present, it wanders around the player’s area and will vaguely follow the player’s path. If it encounters loose items on the ground and has empty inventory slots, it will pick them up and place them into its inventory. The box’s inventory persists between appearances, enabling players to stock it while exploring and retrieve supplies later when it returns to base. Interaction with The Moving Box causes it to open its mouth, suggesting the stored items are kept in its stomach.
Practical usage and behavior notes:
- Inventory: six slots total. Items placed inside remain indefinitely across sessions while the box is not present.
- Useful loadouts: emergency healing items, a crafting bench, a charging station or field batteries, ammunition, drinks and non-refrigerated food, portable toilets, and cots are all viable items to leave in the box as an exploration cache.
- Mobility and timing: The Moving Box appears irregularly and cannot be summoned at will; its sporadic appearances limit its reliability as a persistent resource.
- Day/night cycle: it is a daytime entity and will fall asleep at night. When sleeping it can be found curled up and, if near a
Pet Bed, it is capable of interacting with and sleeping on the bed.
- Player interaction: if the player crouches while The Moving Box is nearby or looking at them, it will adopt a crouch as well. During assault events it exhibits fear behavior, crouching and trembling.
- Retrieval behavior: the box will automatically pick up loose ground items when it has free slots, which can be used strategically to clear and store items while exploring remote areas.
- Containment: no reliable containment method exists; conventional structures only delay escape for limited periods and the entity will eventually free itself from high-level containment.
The Moving Box’s combination of portable storage, non-Euclidean interior space, and persistent inventory makes it a valuable but unpredictable tool for supply management and emergency provisioning during exploration.
