Darkwater Beast

DESIGNATION: Crucis (AG)
CONTAINMENT PROTOCOL: As with all specimens from Anteverse 42, IS-0023 is predicted to outgrow the largest megaspecimen facilities currently available to GATE. While the final extent of the subject's growth is unknown, specimens exceeding 50m in length have been reliably reported by field researchers in A42.
GISP guidelines stipulate hydro-containment dimensions of at least 80x15m for specimens under 15m. All researchers must be accompanied by Gatekeepers or other staff trained in the defensive use of EM emission devices in the range of 100 eV to 100 keV.
Under no circumstances should IS-0023 be fed outside of the clearly defined weekly schedule.
Overview
The Darkwater Beast is a large aquatic creature found in the reservoir in Anteverse 42. It is designated IS-0023 in GATE records and is treated as a dangerous specimen despite its usually sluggish movement. In practice, it is more of a hazard than an immediate threat while kept at a distance, but close contact can turn fatal very quickly.
The creature moves at an extremely slow pace and emits a periodic high-pitched ping while swimming, similar to an underwater radar return. That sound is only audible below the surface of the reservoir, which makes it useful as an early warning when exploring underwater areas. If a diver stays near it long enough, the beast can become hostile: it lets out a loud roar, then charges at the player faster than they can swim before swallowing them. The exact proximity and time needed to trigger this behavior are not clearly defined, so keeping distance is the safest approach.
Contact with its body is dangerous even when it is not actively attacking. Swimming into its tendrils shocks and damages the player, and entering its mouth is instantly lethal. Because of this, the safest response is usually to avoid it entirely and retreat rather than trying to outswim or fight it.
- The Darkwater Beast cannot be killed, so combat is not a viable option.
- The X-Ray Lamp can be used to scare it away.
- It will not attack if the player is swimming above it, making vertical positioning important during underwater travel.
- The Fishing level 15 perk Freshwater Friends makes it passive.
- It is believed to have one of the slowest movement speeds in the game, which reinforces the value of calm, controlled movement over panic when encountered.
GATE’s containment notes describe IS-0023 as a specimen from Anteverse 42 that is expected to outgrow the largest available megaspecimen facilities. The documented guidance calls for substantial hydro-containment and trained personnel equipped with EM emission devices, and warns that the creature must not be fed outside its scheduled feeding time.
