Narcoleptic
Overview
A narcoleptic Duplicant is a Duplicant trait that causes the Duplicant to fall asleep at unpredictable times and locations. The trait description states that the Duplicant "can and will fall asleep anytime, anyplace," meaning sleep episodes are unscheduled and can occur during any activity or in any area of the colony.
Because sleep onset is unpredictable, narcoleptic Duplicants do not reliably remain awake for continuous tasks. They may enter sleep unexpectedly while performing work, traveling, or standing in hazardous environments. Sleep episodes can therefore interrupt routines and reduce the dependability of assignments that require sustained presence or attention.
- Assignments and scheduling: Do not rely on a narcoleptic Duplicant for jobs that must be performed without interruption, such as operating machinery in dangerous locations, tending to active hazards, or tasks that demand continuous manual supervision.
- Placement and safety: Keep narcoleptic Duplicants away from high-risk areas when possible. Placing them in safer, contained work zones or near beds and safe idle locations reduces the chance that an unscheduled sleep will occur in a hazardous spot.
- Task selection: Prefer tasks that tolerate brief interruptions or are easily resumed, for example light crafting, research that can be paused, or roles where automated systems and redundancy cover occasional absences.
- Monitoring: Regularly check a narcoleptic Duplicant’s assignments and surroundings. Quick reassignment or movement to a secure location minimizes the impact of unexpected sleep.
- Colony design: Consider incorporating safety redundancies such as automated shutoffs, barriers, or duplicate personnel for critical systems so that one Duplicant falling asleep does not endanger operations.
This trait is categorical: the Duplicant will experience unscheduled sleep events. Plan colony operations and personnel roles with that unpredictability in mind to reduce disruption and risk.
