Overview

Nyctophobic is a duplicant trait that causes a duplicant to imagine scary shapes in the dark all night if no one leaves a light on. Duplicants with this trait experience vivid fearful imagery when surrounded by darkness; the condition is tied specifically to the absence of any light source during their nighttime or resting period. The trait is labeled Nyctophobic and applies to individual duplicants rather than being a colony-wide condition.

Nyctophobic duplicants do not require special medical attention for the trait itself, but their discomfort with darkness can affect how you arrange living spaces and schedules. Preventing complete darkness during their rest time eliminates the trigger described by the trait: a light left on stops the imagined shapes from occurring. Practical measures focus on ensuring an illuminated environment whenever a Nyctophobic duplicant might be sleeping, working in dark shifts, or spending extended time in a room without natural light.

  • Keep at least one light source enabled in rooms where Nyctophobic duplicants sleep or spend long periods. A continuously lit lamp or light fixture prevents the condition from activating.
  • Place their bedroom or bunkroom in a part of the base that can be reliably lit at night, or use lights that remain on through the night. Portable or motion-activated lights may help if they are used in a way that guarantees illumination when needed.
  • Assign home beds in lit areas rather than dark storage spaces or unlit corridors. If a duplicant tends to linger in a low-light area, consider moving their tasks or recreation to a better-lit room.
  • Plan power routing and automation so that designated lights for Nyctophobic duplicants are not accidentally switched off by scheduling or automation that turns off non-essential lights.
  • Use light-emitting decor or fixtures with a stable power source near their bed to maintain continuous illumination without requiring manual intervention.

Nyctophobic is primarily an environmental trait: its effects are prevented simply by providing light. When accommodating this trait, focus on reliable lighting and the placement of living quarters rather than on medical or social remedies. The simplest and most direct solution is to ensure a light remains on where the duplicant sleeps or spends nighttime hours.
