Overview

A Sign is a placeable building used to leave notes, directions, labels, and other useful information during an adventure. It attaches to a suitable surface and shows an editable text field on its front face, marked by three large black dots. Once placed, the text can be changed at any time, making signs especially useful for organizing bases, marking storage, or giving instructions to other players.

Signs support up to 50 characters, but longer messages become smaller and harder to read. For that reason, short labels are usually the most effective. The sign text uses a simple rich-text style system, so basic formatting can be combined to make messages more readable or decorative. Supported effects include bold, italics, changing text color by name or by hex color code, and line breaks. A newline can be entered with \n or \v, and \r can be used to overwrite existing text in the same line. Emoji can also be inserted, though unicode emoji may take more than one character and reduce the amount of text that fits.

When placing a sign, make sure the three dots are visible, since that is where the text will appear. This makes orientation important, especially on walls, posts, and storage rooms where you want the label to face the player. Because the sign is meant for quick readable information, it works best when the message is kept short and the formatting is used sparingly.

Useful points to keep in mind:

  • Signs can be attached to any suitable surface.
  • The text can be edited after placement.
  • Text length is limited, and dense messages become less legible.
  • Formatting commands must be entered without spaces, or they will not work.
  • Basic formatting can be stacked, allowing effects such as colored bold text.
  • Emoji are supported, but some emoji may consume multiple characters.

Signs are one of the simplest but most practical communication tools in Valheim, especially in multiplayer bases where clear labeling saves time and prevents confusion.
