Black Metal Axe

The Black metal axe is a late-game axe and one of the strongest tools for both combat and lumbering in Valheim. It can fell trees and recover Wood, while also serving as a solid one-handed weapon thanks to its high slash damage and improved durability through upgrades.

Its standard attack is a three-hit combo, with the third strike dealing double damage. The alternate attack is a slow overhead blow that hits much harder and is especially useful for taking out tree stumps that sit too low to be reached cleanly with the normal swing. As an axe, it also has a strong chopping role outside of combat, making it a practical carry item when traveling through established biomes or managing a base’s wood supply.

To unlock the crafting recipe, all required materials must be in the inventory, and a Forge of level 4 or higher is needed. The base version requires 6 Finewood, 20 Black Metal, and 5 Linen Thread. Each upgrade increases the axe’s staying power and damage:

• Quality 1: 175 durability, 100 slash, 60 chop
• Quality 2: 225 durability, 105 slash, 63 chop
• Quality 3: 275 durability, 110 slash, 66 chop
• Quality 4: 325 durability, 115 slash, 69 chop

Upgrade costs are:

• Quality 2: 10 Black metal, 5 Linen thread
• Quality 3: 20 Black metal, 10 Linen thread
• Quality 4: 30 Black metal, 15 Linen thread
• Total to max it out: 6 Finewood, 80 Black metal, 35 Linen thread

The Black metal axe weighs 2, grants a 2x parry bonus, has 60 knockback, 3x backstab damage, and -5% movement speed. It has 0 parry force. On the weapon side, it is a straightforward and reliable choice for players who want a single item that can cut trees efficiently and still perform well in close combat.
