Overview

Jotun Bane is a late-game axe weapon that combines strong slash damage with poison damage and solid chopping power. It is crafted at the Forge and belongs to both the weapon and axe categories. In practice, it functions as a hybrid tool: it is effective in combat, but it is also one of the best axes for cutting wood, including Ancient trees and Yggdrasil shoots.

Its attack pattern is straightforward. The primary attack is a three-hit combo, with the third strike dealing double damage. The alternate attack is a slow but powerful overhead chop. That heavy swing is especially useful against tree stumps that sit too low to be hit cleanly with the standard attack.

Jotun Bane is obtained from the Mistlands, where it is randomly placed across the biome. It is not a normal crafted progression item you simply unlock by exploring recipes; to make the recipe available, you must already have every required crafting material in your inventory, and you also need a Forge of at least level 1.

The crafting and upgrade path are as follows:

  • Crafting: 5 Yggdrasil Wood, 15 Iron, 3 Bilebag, 10 Refined Eitr
  • Upgrade 1: 10 Iron, 1 Bilebag, 1 Refined Eitr
  • Upgrade 2: 20 Iron, 2 Bilebag, 2 Refined Eitr
  • Upgrade 3: 30 Iron, 3 Bilebag, 3 Refined Eitr
  • Upgrade 4: 5 Yggdrasil wood, 75 Iron, 9 Bilebag, 16 Refined Eitr

Upgrading improves durability and slash damage while leaving poison damage unchanged:

  • Quality 1: 175 durability, 80 slash, 40 poison, 70 chop
  • Quality 2: 225 durability, 85 slash, 40 poison, 73 chop
  • Quality 3: 275 durability, 90 slash, 40 poison, 76 chop
  • Quality 4: 325 durability, 95 slash, 40 poison, 79 chop

A notable trait of Jotun Bane is that it can chop down Ancient trees and Yggdrasil shoots despite being made of iron. Its chop damage is even higher than the Black Metal Axe, making it an excellent tree-cutting weapon. The blade also gives off a faint yellow glow at all times, providing a small amount of light in dark areas, though it is dim enough that it can still make the holder slightly easier to spot while sneaking. A visible poison effect drips from the blade as well, creating a small yellow splash when it hits surfaces.
