Overview

The Bronze axe is the third craftable axe in Valheim, coming after the Stone Axe and Flint Axe. It is an early Bronze Age tool and weapon that can be used to chop trees for Wood, and it is the first axe capable of felling both Oak and Birch to obtain Finewood. As with the other early axes, it is useful both as a general-purpose woodcutting tool and as a melee weapon in a pinch.

The Bronze axe’s standard attack is a three-hit chain, with the third strike dealing double damage. Its secondary attack is a slower overhead blow with high power, and it is especially effective against low tree stumps that are difficult to hit with the normal swing pattern. Because it combines chopping and combat use, it is often one of the most important early metal upgrades.

To craft it, you must have all required materials in your inventory and also have a Forge at level 1 or higher.

  • Base crafting cost: 4 Wood, 8 Bronze, 2 Leather Scraps
  • Upgrade costs:
    • Quality 2: 4 Bronze, 1 Leather scraps
    • Quality 3: 8 Bronze, 2 Leather scraps
    • Quality 4: 12 Bronze, 3 Leather scraps

Its combat and utility stats improve with upgrades:

  • Slash damage: 40 / 45 / 50 / 55
  • Chop damage: 40 / 43 / 46 / 49
  • Durability: 125 / 175 / 225 / 275 in one source, with another source listing the final value as 250 at quality 4

Other listed properties include weight 1.8, block armor 12, parry bonus 2x, knockback 50, sneak attack multiplier 3x, and movement speed penalty -5%. The axe also upgrades at the Forge, with the same four quality tiers used for its crafting progression.

In practice, the Bronze axe is a major step up from stone and flint tools because it unlocks efficient access to Finewood while still remaining solid in combat. It is one of the first tools that meaningfully expands what trees you can harvest, making it a key milestone in early progression.
