Overview

Leather scraps are a common early-game material used in many of the first craftable tools, weapons, armor pieces, and utility items in Valheim. They are especially important in the opening progression because they are part of the cost for basic ranged and melee gear, as well as several early structures and station upgrades.

They are mainly obtained as a drop from boars, and can also be found while mining muddy scrap piles. Additional sources include chests in the Meadows, bats found in ice caves, and the base raid event You stirred the cauldron. Because of that, Leather scraps remain useful even after the first biome, especially when setting up new bases or crafting replacement gear.

Leather scraps are used in a wide range of recipes, including:

The material is one of the most versatile resources in the game’s early progression. A player will usually spend it quickly at first on armor and weapon upgrades, then continue to need it later for crafting station expansions, decorative pieces, and specialized gear. Since boars are a reliable source, farming them early is an efficient way to stockpile Leather scraps before pushing deeper into Black Forest and beyond.
