A weapon worthy of the Gods! If you get hit with this, you'll know it...

Overview

Stagbreaker is the first two-handed club available to the player in Valheim. It is a heavy ground-slam weapon that attacks by smashing the ground in front of the user, dealing area damage around the impact point and knocking enemies back. It has no secondary attack, and its swing has a short windup before the slam lands.

The weapon deals both blunt and a small amount of pierce damage, which makes it especially useful against groups and enemies vulnerable to blunt attacks. Its first attack costs 12 stamina, takes 2.12 seconds to execute, and hits in a spherical area with a short reach. It also has no multi-target penalty, so the full attack can connect with multiple enemies at once. At base quality, the attack deals 20 blunt and 5 pierce, with blunt damage rising to 26, 32, and 38 at higher upgrade levels while pierce remains 5. The attack also has strong stagger potential, with the stagger value increasing as the weapon is upgraded.

Stagbreaker is crafted from early-game materials, but it still requires access to a forge and some exploration to gather its ingredients. The base recipe uses 20 Corewood, 5 Deer Trophy, and 2 Leather Scraps, with later upgrades adding Bone Fragments and more of the same materials. At maximum quality, the weapon reaches 250 durability. It weighs 4, slows movement by 20%, and has block-related stats that improve with upgrades, making it usable as an emergency defensive tool despite being primarily an offensive weapon.

The most notable practical use for Stagbreaker is in the mountains. Because its slam attack can pass through the surface, striking the ground can reveal buried resources. If the weapon hits something underground and the game displays the "too hard" message, that indicates a vein of silver or obsidian beneath the surface. This makes Stagbreaker a very effective scouting tool for locating silver before obtaining the Wishbone, and it can also help find buried materials without directly exposing them first.

  • Best used against clustered enemies, since the attack is an area slam rather than a focused thrust.
  • The weapon is especially strong for control, since the knockback can interrupt and push back groups.
  • Its blunt damage and stagger make it useful in early and midgame combat where crowd control matters more than precise single-target damage.
  • In mountains, repeated ground slams can be used to search for underground silver by watching for the "too hard" message.
  • Upgrade it when possible, since each quality level increases blunt damage, durability, and block power.

The weapon’s design also reflects its unusual role among Valheim’s early arms: it is not a fast dueling weapon, but a shock weapon meant to dominate space. Its combination of splash damage, knockback, and terrain-revealing utility gives it value well beyond its basic damage numbers.
