Overview

Bone fragments are a basic crafting material found throughout Valheim, especially in burial-related locations and other places where bones are exposed. They are most commonly obtained from skeletons and rancid remains in Burial Chambers and from the many bones scattered through Troll Caves in the Black Forest, but they also appear in several other regions and structures.

In the Meadows, bone fragments can be mined from Stone Graves and Viking Graveyards. In the Plains, they can be collected by destroying the bones around Tar pits. They also appear in Sunken Crypts in the Swamp, and can be looted from destroyed Skugg in the Ashlands. Additional sources include bones near stone structures and troll lairs, buried bones in graveyards, and exposed bones around tar pits. Because they show up in so many bone-themed and underground sites, they are one of the more broadly available early- and mid-game materials.

Bone fragments are used in a number of important crafting and decorative recipes, including:

  • Map Table: 10 Bone fragments
  • Bone Tower Shield: 10 Bone fragments
  • Deer Hide Cape: requires Bone fragments in its recipe
  • Troll Hide Cape: requires Bone fragments in its recipe
  • Troll leather helmet: requires Bone fragments in its recipe
  • Yuleklapp: 1 Bone fragments
  • Bone bolts: 8 Bone fragments
  • Kręgopruj: requires Bone fragments in its recipe
  • Galdr Table crafting for Revive: requires Bone fragments in its recipe

They are also used for decorative and furniture-style crafting, such as the Skeleton Trophy furniture piece, which requires 50 Bone fragments along with several Asksvin bones in the listed recipe. Some seasonal or special items also use them, making it worth saving a stack rather than immediately discarding extras.

Bone fragments are most efficiently gathered by clearing burial sites and caves while progressing through the Black Forest, then expanding to graveyards, crypts, and tar pits as the world opens up. Since skeletons are a major source, any area with repeated skeleton spawns can become a reliable supply point. Destroying exposed bone piles is also a quick way to pick up a few more while traveling.

Because they are used in both early armor progression and several utility items, Bone fragments remain relevant well beyond the first biome and are best treated as a general-purpose bone material rather than a disposable drop.
