Official description

Creates a shield to protect against weather and incoming projectiles. Fuelled by bones of any kind.

Overview

The Shield generator creates a protective dome that shields the player, buildings, and other structures inside it. It blocks rain, preventing players from becoming Wet and keeping structures from taking rain damage, and it also protects against Ashlands cinder rain, incoming projectiles, and stray lava balls thrown up from lava lakes. This makes it especially valuable in dangerous areas and when working close to lava, such as mining Flametal Ore veins near the edge of a lava lake.

A Shield generator can be built on solid ground, as well as on Cage, Stone, Black Marble, or Grausten structures. Its effect radius is a 30-meter sphere centered on the generator. When active, the dome absorbs projectiles that originate outside the shield and hit its edge, including environmental cinders and combat projectiles from players or creatures. Rain does not consume fuel or damage the shield.

The generator can store up to 10 Bone Fragments or Charred Bone as fuel, and it consumes 1 fuel per 500 damage absorbed. Because the shield checks a projectile’s origin position, it is possible to fire a projectile from inside the protected area so that it leaves and re-enters without being absorbed. The shield also has a visible pulsing effect and makes a distinct sound when it blocks a projectile.

Multiple Shield generators can be chained together: if their radii overlap, the overlapping area combines into a larger connected shield. This allows players to cover broader bases or create extended protected zones around farms, roads, or work areas.

A few practical notes are worth keeping in mind:

  • The Shield generator is useful for farming, since many crops cannot be placed under Shelter.
  • It protects against rain damage, but it does not protect structures that rely on the Fire Effect from being extinguished; those still require Shelter.
  • Its fuel consumption is tied to absorbed damage, so heavy projectile activity will drain it faster.
  • It is particularly useful in the Ashlands, where falling cinders and hostile projectiles make exposed builds much less safe.
