Overview

The Chopping block is a Workbench upgrade in Valheim. When placed within 2 meters of a Workbench, it improves that Workbench and expands what can be crafted nearby. It is one of the earliest utility structures in the game and is part of the basic progression path for establishing a functional base.

The Chopping block becomes available once you have obtained Wood and Flint. To place it, use the Hammer and select it from the Crafting tab, then position it close enough to a Workbench for the upgrade to register. Like other Workbench upgrades, it must be placed in range of the station it is meant to enhance.

In practical terms, the Chopping block is meant to be built early and kept beside your main crafting area. Since it is an upgrade rather than a standalone station, its value comes from being properly positioned relative to the Workbench. If it is moved too far away, it stops contributing to the Workbench’s upgrade level.

  • Requires Wood and Flint to unlock.
  • Must be placed near a Workbench to function.
  • Counts as a Workbench upgrade when within 2 meters of the station.
  • Built with the Hammer under the Crafting category.
  • Best placed as part of your early base setup, alongside other Workbench upgrades.
