Overview

Honey is a food ingredient and edible item used throughout Valheim in both cooking and mead production. It can be eaten directly for a small restorative effect, but its real value is as a staple ingredient in many of the game’s most useful recipes.

When consumed on its own, honey restores 8 health and 35 stamina over 15 minutes. This makes it a convenient early food, especially before more advanced meals become available. Its longer duration and balanced recovery make it useful for exploration, gathering, and keeping stamina topped up during low-risk activities.

Honey is most commonly obtained from beehives found in abandoned houses, and can also appear around swamps. Breaking a wild beehive can yield honey and a Queen Bee. The Queen bee is used to craft a beehive at a player base, allowing a self-sustaining honey farm. A placed beehive produces 1 honey every 20 minutes, up to a maximum of 4 honey stored inside at once.

Its importance lies in crafting. Honey is a major ingredient in many mead bases and also appears in several cooking recipes, so maintaining a steady supply is valuable throughout progression. It is especially important for preparing consumables that support survival, combat, and stamina management.

Common uses include:

Because so many recipes require ten units of honey at a time, setting up a beehive farm early is one of the most efficient ways to support a base. A reliable honey supply reduces dependence on wilderness scavenging and helps keep cauldron and mead production running smoothly.
