Overview

Coal is a common resource used as fuel, crafting material, and crafting byproduct in Valheim. It is one of the game’s most important early- and mid-game utility items because it powers metal processing, helps build several functional and decorative pieces, and is required in some recipes.

Coal is obtained in several ways. It drops from Surtlings and can also be found in random chests. Players can produce it deliberately in a Charcoal Kiln by feeding in Wood, Corewood, or Finewood. Another reliable source is overcooking meat on a cooking station, which turns the food into Coal if it is left too long. Coal can also be created in the Obliterator by converting items. In the Ashlands, Wood piles can be ignited to rapidly produce large amounts of Coal, making the area useful for farming if the materials can be transported safely.

Coal is used primarily as fuel for metalworking structures and some light sources. It powers the Smelter, Blast Furnace, Standing Brazier, Hanging Brazier, and Charcoal kiln itself. When used for smelting, the consumption ratio is roughly 1 metal to 2.1 Coal, so large-scale refining quickly creates demand for a steady supply. Coal is also used in a number of recipes, including the Forge, Sign, Black banner, Hanging brazier, and several mead bases and meads such as Mead Base: Poison Resistance and Poison Resistance Mead.

  • Dropped by Surtlings and found in random chests.
  • Made in Charcoal kilns from Wood, Corewood, or Finewood.
  • Produced by overcooking meat on cooking stations.
  • Can be obtained through the Obliterator by converting items.
  • Used as fuel for the Smelter, Blast furnace, Standing brazier, Hanging brazier, and Charcoal kiln.
  • Required for several crafting and building recipes, including the Forge and certain banners.
  • Needed for Mead base: Poison resistance, which in turn creates Poison resistance mead.

Coal is especially valuable for players setting up a permanent smelting base. A passive Coal farm can be built in the Swamp by digging down around Fire geysers so that spawned Surtlings take damage and die repeatedly, dropping Coal. Since Surtlings are fire-based enemies, this method is efficient once the terrain is prepared. For mobile refinement operations, it is worth remembering that Coal is also easy to stockpile in bulk from the Charcoal kiln or from Ashlands wood-burning setups, then bring back through a portal.

Because Coal is consumed quickly in smelting and is needed for both industry and crafting, it is one of the resources worth keeping in regular reserve rather than spending as soon as it is collected.
