Overview
Coal is a common resource used as fuel, crafting material, and crafting byproduct in Valheim. It is one of the game’s most important early- and mid-game utility items because it powers metal processing, helps build several functional and decorative pieces, and is required in some recipes.
Coal is obtained in several ways. It drops from Surtlings and can also be found in random chests. Players can produce it deliberately in a 





Coal is used primarily as fuel for metalworking structures and some light sources. It powers the 







- Dropped by Surtlings and found in random chests.
- Made in Charcoal kilns from Wood, Corewood, or Finewood.
- Produced by overcooking meat on cooking stations.
- Can be obtained through the Obliterator by converting items.
- Used as fuel for the Smelter, Blast furnace, Standing brazier, Hanging brazier, and Charcoal kiln.
- Required for several crafting and building recipes, including the Forge and certain banners.
- Needed for Mead base: Poison resistance, which in turn creates Poison resistance mead.
Coal is especially valuable for players setting up a permanent smelting base. A passive Coal farm can be built in the 
Because Coal is consumed quickly in smelting and is needed for both industry and crafting, it is one of the resources worth keeping in regular reserve rather than spending as soon as it is collected.
