Overview

Stone is a basic building and crafting material in Valheim, found throughout the world and used in a wide range of early- and mid-game constructions. It is one of the most common resources in the game, but it remains important all the way into advanced stone structures and terrain work.

Stone can be gathered from several sources:

  • Pick up loose stones scattered on the ground. These do not respawn once collected.
  • Mine larger stone chunks, Copper deposits, and Silver veins with any pickaxe.
  • Loot it from Greydwarfs, Greydwarf brutes, Greydwarf shamans, and Stone Golems.
  • Some sources also list stone as a possible drop from certain shoreline fishing or similar gathering methods, but the main reliable sources are the ground, mining, and enemy drops.
  • In some cases, stone can also be obtained by breaking stone structures.

Its main use is in construction. Stone is the primary material for stone building pieces such as stone floors, walls, stairs, pillars, arches, and stone piles, and it is also required for several important crafting stations and utility structures. Among the most notable uses are the Stonecutter, Smelter, Blast Furnace, Charcoal Kiln, and Windmill, along with the Hearth and Campfire. It is also used for some furniture and decorative pieces, such as the Stone throne and Hot Tub.

Stone is required for crafting:

With a Stonecutter, stone opens up a much broader set of building options, including heavy stone structural pieces and advanced stone furnishings. This makes it a key material for fortified bases, defensive walls, and durable buildings.

Stone is also important for terrain shaping. With a Hoe, it is used to:

  • Raise the ground, which creates a highly durable earth wall
  • Lay paved roads or stone flooring, depending on the available menu option

Using the hoe for terrain work consumes stamina, and paving stone roads requires 4 Stone. A Workbench must be nearby for the hoe’s paving and terrain functions to be available.

Because stone is so widely used, it is worth collecting whenever possible. Early on, loose stones and basic mining provide enough for simple tools and shelters, while later stone becomes a major supply bottleneck for large bases, industrial structures, and landscaping projects.
