Overview

Sharpening stone is a crafting material in Valheim used to make the Grinding Wheel, a Forge upgrade. It is part of the Black Forest-to-Plains progression of metalworking materials, and it becomes relevant once a player is improving their smithing setup rather than simply gathering ore and basic resources.

Sharpening stone can be found in Fuling villages in the Plains, where it appears as loot in goblin settlements. It can also be crafted at the Stonecutter. Because of this, it is both a found and produced resource, making it easier to stockpile once the necessary crafting station is available.

Its main use is straightforward:

  • Used to craft the Grinding wheel
  • The Grinding wheel is a Forge improvement, so sharpening stone directly supports better forge progression

Since it is tied to forge upgrades rather than combat or building defense, sharpening stone is most valuable to players who are expanding their crafting infrastructure. If you are preparing to mass-produce better weapons, armor, or tools, securing enough sharpening stone for the Grinding wheel is part of the upgrade path.

In practice, the Plains source is the most dangerous route, but it is also the most immediate if you are raiding Fuling settlements. Crafting through the Stonecutter provides a safer and more reliable option once the station is established, letting you avoid depending entirely on village loot.
