Overview

Black Forest is a biome made up of large, dark forests with pine and fir trees, uneven ground, and frequent rocky hills with exposed boulders. It is one of the first major biomes that pushes progression beyond the Meadows, and it is the place where players begin finding copper and tin deposits for early metalworking. The biome also contains Haldor the trader in some worlds.

Black Forest is notable for its mix of surface resources and dangerous points of interest. It contains abandoned structures, Troll caves, Burial Chambers, and the burial mounds associated with Surtling spawns. Skeletons are common around burial sites, while Greydwarfs, Greydwarf shamans, and Greydwarf brutes are widespread throughout the woods. Trolls also roam the biome, making exploration risky before proper armor and weapons are available.

Common resources found here include:

Other loot can be found in chests and barrels in ruined structures, and abandoned buildings sometimes contain beehives. Black Forest is also a source of several early-game crafting materials and enemy drops, including Greydwarf eyes, resin, leather scraps, deer hide, troll hide, bone fragments, feathers, and flint, depending on the specific local spawns and nearby terrain.

The biome’s enemies are hostile but manageable with preparation. Greydwarfs and their variants attack in groups, trolls hit hard, and skeletons are often encountered near burial chambers. Since many of these enemies inhabit different parts of the biome, pulling them into each other can create useful infighting and give the player room to attack. Trolls are especially dangerous in open terrain, but their size and limited mobility make them easier to fight at range or around obstacles.

Black Forest is also the natural place to gather materials needed for several early progression milestones, especially bronze production. Copper and tin are unique to this biome, and Burial Chambers provide surtling cores needed for smelters and charcoal kilns. The biome’s boss progression is tied to the Elder, whose summoning uses ancient seeds found here, and defeating him grants the Swamp Key.
