Overview

Stone golems are large stone creatures found in the mountain biome. Before they notice a player, they appear as a pile of rocks and remain dormant; when a player gets close, they wake up, briefly shake nearby players’ screens, and take on their true humanoid form. They are durable enemies with high health and resistance to most damage types, and they are one of the mountain’s more dangerous encounters for undergeared players.

Stone golems come in two variants, determined by their arms. Sledge golems use heavy blunt attacks, while spiked golems use sharper attacks and are generally more dangerous at close range. Both variants share the same basic behavior: they can chain up to three attacks before pausing and moving away briefly or circling the player, which creates a short opening to counterattack.

Their attacks are:

  • Sledge golem ground slam: a fast single-arm slam that deals 110 blunt damage and 100 chop / 100 pickaxe damage in an 8-meter, 70-degree vertical arc.
  • Sledge golem double smash: a slower two-arm slam that deals 110 blunt damage and 100 chop / 100 pickaxe damage in an 8.66-meter, 70-degree vertical arc.
  • Spiked golem spike: a straight thrust that deals 110 pierce damage and 100 chop / 100 pickaxe damage in a 7-meter line.
  • Spiked golem spike sweep: a horizontal sweep that deals 110 blunt damage and 100 chop / 100 pickaxe damage in a 7.71-meter, 104.24-degree arc.

The safest approach is to parry their lighter attacks with a shield, then punish the stun window with strong melee weapons. A fully upgraded iron mace or Porcupine can remove a large portion of their health during the brief opening. Their slower attacks do not reward a long stun, so timing matters more than brute force. Players using Bone mass can make the fight much easier, since the golem’s attacks are slow enough to let you circle behind it and strike from the rear.

Pickaxes are also effective because stone golems are made of stone and take bonus damage from pickaxe hits. However, pickaxes attack more slowly, have lower base damage, and cannot be used while a shield is equipped, so they are usually less reliable overall than a strong blunt weapon. Their damage can also be reduced if the hitbox clips the ground, which makes jumping attacks, elevated terrain, or close positioning more consistent.

Ranged combat is possible with a strong bow, high Archery skill, and Obsidian arrows. It is also practical to dig a trench or pit and lure the golem into it, either by kiting it or pulling it with an Abyssal Harpoon. This can trap it in a confined space and make it easier to strike, especially against spiked golems, which cannot easily swing over a player’s head. Leaving a golem trapped in a pit can also keep other nearby golems from spawning.

Stone golems cannot climb sheer cliffs or follow narrow paths, so a switchback trail up a mountainside is an effective way to avoid them while still reaching higher ground. They are also enemies of drakes, so luring the two into each other can be used to weaken golems or obtain crystals early. Players without at least wolf armor or comparable protection, and without strong food, should be very careful when fighting them, since their attacks hit hard and can quickly overwhelm unprepared characters.

Stone golems drop crystal and stone, and they can also drop a Stone golem trophy.
