Overview

Fuling are aggressive goblin-like creatures found in the Plains, where they often appear in groups and around Fuling villages and camps. They are one of the biome’s most dangerous regular enemies, especially for unprepared players, because of their high damage, speed, and tendency to swarm. Their chatter and laughter are often the first warning that they are nearby, and their sharp hearing lets them notice players from unusually far away, especially when trees are cut down or ore is mined.

In combat, Fulings circle their target briefly before attacking. They may perform a short series of three melee strikes or use a ranged weapon, then repeat the pattern. Most of their attacks are short-ranged, which makes parrying and dodging effective if timed well, but their damage is severe enough that even well-equipped players can die quickly if caught off guard. They are also very agile, and their small size can make their attacks awkward to land on uneven terrain.

Fulings can spawn with different weapons, which determine their attack type:

  • Sword: a slashing melee attack.
  • Club: a blunt melee attack.
  • Spear: a thrown ranged attack.
  • Torch: a blunt and fire attack that applies Burning.

They also have a 33% chance to carry a shield, but it is cosmetic only. Their attacks generally have a short reach, and all except the spear arc horizontally by 90 degrees and extend 2.4 meters. The club and sword attacks deal 85 damage of their respective types, each with a 2-second cooldown and a range of 1.6 meters. The torch attack deals 45 blunt and 45 fire damage, also with a 2-second cooldown and a range of 1.6 meters. The spear is thrown at the player, deals 85 pierce damage, travels at 20 meters per second, lasts up to 10 seconds, and has a 4-second cooldown with a range of 14 meters.

Their speed and aggression make it best to fight them one at a time whenever possible. If a Fuling can be isolated, parrying its first strike can create an opening for a strong follow-up attack and may even stagger it again. Weapons with knockback are especially useful, and area attacks can help against groups. A Frostner or Porcupine can push them back and disrupt their attacks, while Atgeir attacks and the primary attack of clubs can damage multiple enemies at once.

Ranged combat is often the safest way to thin out Fuling camps before engaging. A fully upgraded Huntsman Bow with Frost arrows or Needle arrows can one-shot a normal Fuling from stealth. Frost arrows are especially effective because they can also slow them down or briefly stop them. Silver arrows and Obsidian arrows are also effective, though they are less reliable for instant kills. Because groups are so dangerous, it is often wise to weaken camp defenders from a distance before entering.

Fulings are particularly poor swimmers. This makes water a useful defensive tool: luring them across rivers, to the coast, or into player-dug trenches can slow them down and make them much easier to isolate or shoot. They may fail to recognize the edge of a ditch until it is too late, which can be used to trap them. When exploring their territory, avoid letting them surround you, since they can close distance very quickly and punish missed attacks.

They drop Black Metal Scrap and Coins, and they can also drop a Fuling Trophy. Starred variants increase their Black Metal scrap and Coin drops. Runestones and totems suggest that they worship Yagluth, a long-dead king.
