Overview

Plains is a late-game biome made up of wide open grasslands, rolling hills, scattered groves, and a great deal of stone formations, both natural and built. It is typically encountered after the Mountain biome and is one of the most dangerous regions in the game despite its bright, open appearance. Fog can still be common here, which makes the biome more hazardous than it first seems.

The Plains is the fifth biome in the usual progression and contains the altar for the fifth Forsaken, Yagluth. It is also the only biome where there is just one armor set available, making it a major transition zone between earlier survival gear and endgame equipment. Fuling settlements, ruined towers, and outposts can be found throughout the biome, along with stone monuments and other rock formations. Some of these structures may contain treasure chests or a vegvisir that reveals Yagluth’s location.

Plains resources include:

The biome’s enemies are a major part of its identity. Common threats include Fuling, Fuling shamans, Fuling berserkers, Lox, Growths, and Deathsquitos. Some sources also list passive wildlife such as gulls and groupers. Fuling villages are defended by groups of goblins, with shamans providing shields and fire support, while berserkers are especially dangerous due to their raw melee power. Deathsquitos are among the most infamous Plains enemies because they can strike quickly and deal heavy damage. Lox are large, powerful beasts that roam the fields, and Growths can be found near tar pits.

Tar pits are a distinctive Plains feature. These depressions are filled with tar and are usually inhabited by Growths, which attack by spraying tar that deals damage, poison, and slows movement. Items dropped into or near the tar can become stuck in the ground until the tar is drained away. Digging a trench to lower the tar level is the usual way to recover trapped items and collect tar for building upgrades.

The biome also contains tall columns of stone that can be mined with a pickaxe. If the base is fully dug out, the entire pillar collapses and becomes usable as a foundation, since the game treats it like ground. This makes these formations valuable for unconventional building sites.

Plains is an excellent place to gather barley, flax, and cloudberries, but harvesting and logging here are risky because of the constant threat from enemy patrols and coastal Deathsquitos. Birch groves are plentiful, making the biome useful for wood collection as well, though prolonged work in the open is rarely safe. When exploring the Plains, it is best to move carefully, scout for nearby villages and tar pits, and treat every open field as potentially hostile.
