Overview

Mountain is a cold, snowy biome made up of steep peaks, rocky ridges, and exposed slopes. It is one of the most dangerous regions in Valheim, with freezing temperatures, sudden blizzards, and hostile wildlife making travel hazardous until the player is properly equipped. Fir is the only tree that naturally grows in this biome, and in some regions the mountains descend all the way to sea level, forming a harsher mixed landscape of fir woods, rock formations, and white shoreline that is still patrolled by Wolves and Fenrings.

Entering the Mountain applies the Frost effect, which must be countered by warming up near a fire, drinking Frost Resistance Mead, or wearing suitable cold-weather gear such as wolf, Lox, or other frost-protective armor pieces. If it is already raining in another biome, the rain effect can linger briefly after moving into the mountains. Precipitation here usually appears as snow of varying intensity, and these weather effects do not affect gameplay. High-intensity blizzards can, however, cause frame drops.

The biome contains a number of valuable resources. Silver veins are buried beneath the snow and can be located with the Wishbone obtained from Bonemass. Silver requires an Iron Pickaxe or better to mine. Obsidian also appears in exposed surface deposits and likewise requires an Iron pickaxe or better. Mountain chests can contain useful supplies, and Onion seeds are commonly found in chests inside abandoned shacks.

The Mountain is home to several dangerous enemies, including Moder, Wolves, Drakes, Stone Golems, Fenrings at night, and the undead found in mountain towers and cabins. Frost caves add Bat, Ulv, and Cultist encounters, with Tetra appearing as a passive creature inside those caves. Stone piles on the mountain can awaken into Stone golems, and large cairns are sometimes found on the peaks.

  • Silver is one of the biome’s most important late-game resources because it is used for powerful gear and equipment progression.
  • Obsidian is especially useful for crafting Obsidian arrows.
  • Dragon eggs can be found near Drakes’ nests on higher peaks and are used to summon Moder.
  • Mountain towers and ruined cabins may contain Skeletons or Draugr, along with chests.
  • Frost caves provide a separate underground challenge and are important for players seeking mountain-specific loot and enemies.
  • In some areas, the mountains are dense enough with hazards that careful route planning and fire placement are essential for survival.

The Deep North is also described as a far-northern region made primarily of mountains, but it does not contain enemies or resources.
