Overview

Mistlands is a late-game biome defined by dense, persistent mist that severely limits visibility and makes navigation difficult. The terrain is rugged and oppressive, with steep hills, ravines, cliffs, and tall black rocks that often rise above the fog. Large glowing ancient roots and Yggdrasil shoots are visible throughout the region, and the shoreline is especially hazardous because its jagged rocks and shoals can wreck an unprepared boat.

The biome is inhabited by aggressive and neutral factions alike. Common enemies include seekers, seeker soldiers, ticks, and gjall, while dvergr settlements can also be found here. Dvergr are neutral by default, but they become hostile if attacked or if their structures are damaged; this hostility is limited to the area where the betrayal is witnessed. The Mistlands also introduces a more magical progression path, since later gear and food from the biome provide access to Eitr-based abilities.

Many of the biome’s resources and structures are tied to its ruined, ancient atmosphere. Players can find dvergr towers, dvergr camps, dvergr harbors, infested mines, infested citadels, ancient roots, and the remains of ancient bones, armor, and swords. These locations provide materials such as black marble, copper, iron, Yggdrasil Wood, sap, black cores, sealbreaker fragments, carapace, mandibles, blood clots, bilebags, royal jelly, seeker meat, jotun puffs, magecaps, and scale hide. Some roots can be harvested with a sap extractor, and once fully drained they regenerate on their own.

Mist in the biome can be temporarily cleared with wisp-based items crafted using Wisp, which is obtained after defeating Yagluth. These tools are essential for exploration, especially in open terrain and around structures hidden by fog. At lower elevations, the mist does not fully form, so there is usually a narrow visible band above water that can be used to see beneath it while swimming or traveling near the shore.

  • Most enemies in the Mistlands deal mainly pierce damage, with some blunt damage mixed in.
  • Gjall and Dvergr mages are notable for adding fire- and frost-related threats to the biome’s combat mix.
  • The majority of Mistlands items can be obtained before defeating Yagluth, but Mistwalker, Wisplight, and the Wisp Torch require Yagluth’s drop.
  • Some world seeds generated before the Mistlands update may contain partially updated Mistlands terrain without mist or structures; these areas can still spawn creatures such as hares and seekers.
  • Earlier placeholder versions of the biome had a very different look, with giant roots, spider webs, and large skulls, while later prerelease terrain was barren before the mist and structures were added.
