Troll

Trolls are large hostile creatures found in the Black Forest and among the largest enemies in Valheim. They are powerful, durable, and capable of dealing heavy damage to players, tamed creatures, other factions, and nearby resources such as ores, rocks, buildings, and trees. Their size also limits their mobility: they cannot pass through narrow gaps, and their pathing can be disrupted by terrain, pits, and obstacles.

Trolls spawn in two main variants: about one third carry a log, while the rest are unarmed. Log trolls have longer reach and stronger area damage, while unarmed trolls rely on punches, a ground slam, and rock throws. Their attacks are slow enough to dodge reliably, but they are difficult to block or parry without strong equipment. They also turn slowly, which makes circling them around trees, fallen logs, rocks, or other obstacles an effective way to stay out of reach. Despite their size, trolls move faster than a player who is only walking, so trying to simply outrun one is usually unsafe unless sprinting.

• Trolls are weak to pierce damage, making spears and knives especially effective.
• Bows are a strong choice, and fire arrows work well when conditions are dry; rain or water can extinguish the fire and remove the burn damage.
• A shield with high parry power, such as a Bronze Buckler or better, can parry a troll, though it takes practice.
• Endgame armor greatly reduces the damage taken from troll attacks.
• Trolls are not hostile to Greydwarfs, and Greydwarf shamans can even heal them.
• Because trolls attack other factions, nearby Skeletons can sometimes be used as distractions.
• In the swamp, trolls often lose interest quickly because they get pulled toward swamp creatures such as Leeches.
• Deep ditches and pits are highly effective defenses, since trolls can become trapped or refuse to enter sufficiently deep trenches.
• If a troll is lured to a dungeon entrance or the edge of a pit, players can attack safely while it struggles with the terrain.
• Trolls can severely damage structures, so digging trenches or raising earth walls around settlements is a practical way to contain them.

Unarmed trolls have a 5-meter punch, a ground slam used at close range, and a thrown boulder attack that can be avoided by staying close. Log trolls replace the rock throw and ground slam with sweeping log attacks, including a wide horizontal swing and a vertical ground smash. Summoned Trolls created with Trollstav are aggressive as well, attack all other creatures in range, and can also appear in armed or unarmed forms.
