Overview

Greydwarfs are hostile creatures found primarily in the Black Forest, though they can also appear in other biomes, especially during events and after Eikthyr has been defeated. They often travel in groups of one to three, but can also be encountered alone, and they may hunt the player at night. They are one of the earliest threats new players face and are notable for their fear of fire.

In combat, a Greydwarf uses a close-range scratch attack and a ranged rock throw when the player is too far away to strike in melee. It will rush in, attack twice, retreat, and then attack again after a short delay. If the player stays at range, it throws stones instead. Fire is an effective deterrent: holding a Torch can keep them from closing into melee, though they can still throw rocks. Early on, they are easy to defeat with Torches or any other weapon, but when fighting groups it is important to dodge the stones thrown by other Greydwarfs and pull them apart one at a time. When fighting a single Greydwarf, blocking its strikes with a Shield or weapon and counterattacking is effective.

Greydwarfs also interact with the world in ways that can be disruptive. Their rock throws can destroy planted crops such as Carrots and Turnips, and can damage newly planted trees, so farms should be fenced in or placed out of their reach. They are also used against Greydwarf Nests in a slow but possible tactic: hiding behind the nest causes nearby Greydwarfs to throw rocks at you, which can be directed toward the nest over time.

  • Greydwarfs come in normal, 1-star, and 2-star variants; higher-star versions have increased damage, health, and loot.
  • 1-star Greydwarfs have red bark, while 2-star Greydwarfs are mostly blue with blue bark and accents.
  • They can swim and are able to attack both in melee and with rocks while in water.
  • Greydwarfs are derived from the folkloric creatures of Astrid Lindgren’s Ronja the Robber’s Daughter.
