Overview

Resin is a basic crafting material obtained early in Valheim. It is commonly dropped by Greylings, Greydwarves, Greydwarf shamans, and Greydwarf brutes, making it especially easy to collect while exploring Meadows and the Black Forest. It can also be found in chests in those biomes, and it has a chance to drop when cutting down trees such as birch and other common woods.

Resin has a wide range of uses despite its simplicity. It is a key ingredient in several early-game and utility items, including torches, fire arrows, wooden shields, mugs, and meads such as Odin’s horn. It is also used in a number of building pieces and fuel-based furnishings, which makes it a persistent resource even after the early game.

Common uses include:

  • Crafting torches and fire arrows
  • Crafting a wooden shield and mug
  • Crafting bomb types such as ooze bombs and bile bombs
  • Building and fueling light sources such as standing wood torches, standing iron torches, sconces, and turnip lanterns
  • Building boats and the fermenter

Several structures require Resin as part of their construction costs. The raft uses Resin alongside wood and leather scraps, the Karve requires Resin along with finewood, deer hide, and bronze nails, and the fermenter needs finewood, bronze, and Resin. Resin is also used for decorative and functional lighting, including the standing wood torch, sconce, and standing iron torch, and these light sources can be refilled with more Resin when they run out.

In combat and progression, Resin remains useful through the crafting of fire arrows and throwing bombs. It is also part of the recipe for ooze bombs and bile bombs, so it continues to matter well beyond the first biome. Because many enemy groups drop it in bulk, players often accumulate Resin naturally while fighting Greylings and Greydwarves, making it one of the least troublesome resources to maintain.

Resin is also treated as fuel for certain light fixtures and Halloween-related furniture in the game’s building system. As a result, it serves both as a crafting ingredient and as a maintenance resource for player bases, especially those that rely on torches and lamps for illumination.
