Overview

Wood shield is a basic shield in Valheim, available very early in progression and crafted at a workbench. It is the first shield players can make from simple starting materials, making it an early option for blocking while exploring, fighting greydwarfs, or dealing with the first enemies around the Meadows and Black Forest.

The shield can be upgraded through three quality levels. At quality 1 it provides 6 block armor and 200 durability. Quality 2 increases it to 12 block armor and 250 durability, and quality 3 raises it to 18 block armor and 300 durability. Each upgrade also raises the workbench requirement, so improving it gradually pushes the player to keep a better base setup.

Crafting and upgrade costs are:

  • Quality 1: 10 Wood, 4 Resin, 4 Leather Scraps; workbench level 1
  • Quality 2: 5 Wood, 2 Resin, 2 Leather scraps; workbench level 2
  • Quality 3: 10 Wood, 4 Resin, 4 Leather scraps; workbench level 3

The total cost to fully upgrade one Wood shield is 25 Wood, 10 Resin, and 10 Leather scraps.

When crafting the shield, the player can choose from several preset visual styles and color combinations by clicking the style button beneath the item name in the crafting window. This choice is permanent for that item, so the appearance should be selected before crafting if a specific look is desired.

As a starter shield, the Wood shield is useful because it is inexpensive and easy to replace. Its upgrade path improves both protection and survivability, making it a sensible early investment until stronger shields become available later in the game.
