Overview

Turnip is a cultivated crop grown from Turnip seeds with the Cultivator. It is one of the basic farmable plants in Valheim and is obtained by planting seeds, then waiting for the crop to fully mature before harvesting. A fully grown Turnip takes between 4000 and 5000 seconds to grow, roughly 66m 40s to 83m 20s of real time, or about 2.22 to 2.78 in-game days.

Turnips are not eaten raw. Instead, they are mainly used as a cooking ingredient, as animal feed, and as a source of more seeds for continued farming. Planting a Turnip produces a Seed-turnip, which can be grown to yield 3 Turnip seeds, making it possible to maintain and expand a turnip farm without relying on new wild seed sources. Turnips can be grown in the Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Plains, and Mistlands, but cannot be grown in the Mountain biome.

Turnips are used in several important recipes and crafting chains:

Beyond cooking, Turnips are also useful for taming and breeding boars. They can be fed to wild boars to help acclimate them, and they can also be tossed toward them while sneaking to slowly tame them. This makes turnip cultivation valuable even before a player needs large quantities of food, since it supports both farming and animal husbandry.

Because each planted Turnip can produce seeds through the Seed-turnip growth cycle, it is worth keeping a steady supply in the farm rotation. The crop is especially useful once a player begins relying on advanced cauldron recipes, since turnip-based food offers a reliable early-to-mid game upgrade and remains part of several later crafting stations and seasonal items.
