Scrap Iron

Scrap iron is a metal resource found in Valheim, primarily in the Swamp. It is one of the main sources of iron early in progression, and it is most commonly obtained by breaking apart Muddy scrap piles inside Sunken Crypts. These piles are the large, sludge-covered deposits found throughout the crypts, which can only be entered after defeating The Elder and obtaining the Swamp Key.

Scrap iron can also be found buried underground in the Swamp. The Wishbone, which is dropped by Bonemass, can be used to locate these hidden deposits. When the player is close to a buried pile, the Wishbone will signal its presence, making it possible to dig up the resource without relying on crypts. A large hammer can also be used to test the ground: if the message “too hard” appears, it often indicates buried Muddy scrap piles, although this warning can also appear when striking too close to an ancient tree.

In addition to swamp sources, Scrap iron can be found in chests inside Sunken Crypts. It is also dropped by Oozers that spawn at night in the Swamp and during events. In the Mistlands, Scrap iron can be obtained by mining ancient swords and armor remains made of black metal, and it may also come from some dwarven structures. Sources note that these alternative methods can yield Scrap iron outside the swamp’s main deposits.
