Overview

The Beehive is a buildable structure that produces Honey over time. It is usually obtained by destroying a wild beehive, which is found in abandoned houses in the Meadows, and collecting the Queen Bee it drops. Once built, it serves as a steady early-game source of Honey, one of the most useful foods and crafting ingredients in Valheim.

Beehives must be placed outdoors in an open area to function properly. If they are cramped or too close together, they become unhappy; the only factor affecting their happiness is how near other beehives are. When working normally, the hive’s status text changes depending on the time and conditions: at night it always says the bees are sleeping, while during the day it will say the bees are happy or angry. A happy hive produces Honey, and an angry one does not.

A single Beehive produces one Honey every 20 minutes and can store up to 4 Honey at once. Because production is slow but steady, it is worth checking and collecting them regularly so that they do not sit full. Since hives are considered structures in the world, they can be attacked by nearby monsters just like workbenches and other exposed base pieces. If your base is often harassed by creatures such as Greydwarfs, it is wise to place a wall or other protection around them.

  • Place Beehives outside, with clear space around them.
  • Do not cluster too many hives too tightly together if you want them to stay happy.
  • Protect them from hostile creatures, especially in areas where raids or roaming enemies are common.
  • Collect Honey often so production does not stop at the 4-Honey storage limit.
  • If you want to start building more hives, destroy wild beehives in Meadows houses to get additional Queen bees.

Wild beehives are dangerous to approach too closely, as they inflict poison. Breaking one is the standard way to get the Queen bee needed for construction, making abandoned Meadows houses an important source of early beekeeping materials. Once established, a small hive farm can become a reliable supply line for food, mead ingredients, and other recipes that rely on Honey.
