Overview

The grinding wheel is a forge upgrade that becomes available once iron has been acquired and a sharpening stone has been made. It is part of the set of non-metal forge improvements and is notable for being portable through a portal, unlike upgrades that require metal bars. To craft the sharpening stone needed for it, a Stonecutter must already be available.

A grinding wheel is built from 5 stone and 25 wood and is placed with the hammer from the Crafting tab. A Workbench must be nearby to place it, and when positioned within 2 meters of a Forge it counts as an upgrade to that station. Like the other forge improvements, it is used to raise the forge’s utility for advanced crafting rather than to provide a direct combat benefit.

Because its recipe is inexpensive and its components are common, it is one of the easier forge upgrades to obtain once the midgame iron progression has begun. The main requirement is access to a Stonecutter, since that station is needed to make the sharpening stone in the first place. After that, the grinding wheel is straightforward to build and can be moved between bases or transported through portals as needed.

In practical use, the grinding wheel is especially convenient for forward outposts and secondary bases, since it does not force the player to haul metal resources just to improve a Forge. This makes it a flexible early-to-mid progression upgrade for any settlement that is expected to support crafting, repairs, or equipment production away from the main base.
