story

Valheim is a third-person survival and exploration game set in a procedurally generated world inspired by Norse mythology and Viking culture. Players begin with nothing, gather resources, build shelters and settlements, craft equipment and weapons, and fight monsters while working toward a place in Valhalla.

Setting and premise

The world of Valheim is the tenth world of Yggdrasil, the world tree of Norse mythology. Odin defeated his enemies and cast them into this world, then severed its connection to the world tree, leaving it adrift as a place of exile.

Over the centuries, the land remained restless but did not die. When Odin learned that his enemies had grown strong again, he sent his Valkyries to the battlefields of Midgard to find the greatest warriors. Those slain in battle are reborn in Valheim to prove their worth.

The player’s role

The player arrives in Valheim as a fallen Viking with no equipment. The goal is to survive the hostile world and prove worthy of the halls of Valhalla. Guidance comes through instinct and the occasional hint from a raven, along with messages from Odin.

To earn that fate, the player must confront the sworn enemies of Odin and the great evils that haunt Valheim. Success means survival, strength, and eventual acceptance by the gods; failure means being denied that place and cast into Hel.

Gameplay loop

Valheim combines exploration, resource gathering, crafting, and combat.

  • Explore the world and its different biomes
  • Gather natural resources through foraging, hunting, mining, and farming
  • Build shelters, outposts, and farms
  • Craft tools, armor, weapons, and other gear
  • Fight monsters and bosses that guard each region

The game uses a skill system where abilities improve through use. It supports solo play, online cooperative play on servers with up to 10 players, and optional PvP.

World and biomes

Each generated world contains a variety of biomes, including:

Each biome has its own enemies, items, and bosses, creating distinct survival challenges as the player progresses.

Time and atmosphere

The game features a day-night cycle. Its low-resolution, stylized 3D presentation and action-oriented combat give it a distinctive tone, while the setting, lore, and imagery are rooted in Norse myth. The overall experience emphasizes harsh survival, exploration, and mythic struggle.

Odin, the raven, and the sacrifice stones

Odin frames the world’s purpose and the player’s trial. In the lore, the player is told to trust the ravens that carry Odin’s words. The sacrifice stones serve as a central ritual site: the player must defeat the Forsaken in order, offering their trophies at these stones to unlock their path forward.

The story’s core theme

At its heart, Valheim is about proving valor in a hostile world. A warrior is sent into the tenth world to survive among beasts and monsters, reclaim favor from the gods, and earn a place in Valhalla beside Odin.
