Overview

Drakes are flying dragon creatures found in the Mountains. They are often encountered near Dragon eggs, where they patrol the area and defend the nest. Their appearance is also reflected in early game materials, where they were originally introduced as Dragon Hatchlings before being renamed to Drakes.

Drakes attack from range by firing three frost projectiles in quick succession. Each shot inflicts the Frost effect and deals 90 Frost damage. The projectiles travel fast, have noticeable spread, and can be used at medium distance, making Drakes dangerous opponents in open terrain or when multiple enemies are present. They are especially threatening to players without frost resistance, since the effect slows movement for about two seconds and can make it harder to avoid the next volley.

A Drake’s behavior is straightforward but punishing: after firing, it will circle briefly and then attack again. The best opening to strike is just before it launches its frost balls, when it hangs in place for the shot. Because they fly and keep some distance, ranged weapons are generally the safest way to fight them. Bows are effective, and players can also make use of the terrain in the Mountains to keep line of sight while avoiding prolonged exposure to projectiles.

  • Drakes have a maximum chase distance of 200 meters from their spawn position, after which they lose aggression more easily.
  • They are commonly found near Dragon eggs, so a nest can turn into a dangerous but rewarding hunting ground.
  • Their drops are unusually valuable: Freeze glands are required for frost-based weapons and foods, and the Drake Trophy is used for Wolf Armor.
  • Their attacks can be especially dangerous in rain or in the Swamp if they are encountered outside their usual biome, since wet conditions increase frost danger.
  • If fire arrows are available, they can serve as a practical alternative early on, though stronger bows and better arrows improve the fight considerably.

When farming Drakes, it is worth remembering that their Freeze glands are the main reason to hunt them. These glowing blue drops are essential progression materials, and the trophy has its own crafting use as well. Since Drakes tend to hover and attack from a fixed distance, fighting them in a controlled area with good mobility and frost protection makes the encounter much safer than engaging them head-on in the open.
