Black Metal

Black metal is a late-game metal resource used in some of the strongest Plains- and Mistlands-era equipment. It is smelted from Black Metal Scrap in a Blast Furnace, using Coal as fuel. The metal becomes available only after defeating Moder, and it marks the fourth major equipment tier after silver.

Like other metals, Black metal cannot be transported through portals. It must be carried by hand or moved by non-portal means. It is also notable for what it does not do: unlike most progression metals, it has no armor set of its own. The Plains-tier Padded Armor is made from Iron instead, so Black metal is reserved for weapons, certain utility items, and a few structures.

The material is also required for upgrading the associated gear. Crafting one of every base Black metal weapon and shield takes 98 Black metal, and fully upgrading that equipment requires an additional 260, for a total of 358 Black metal. This makes it one of the most heavily used late-game metals once the player starts outfitting a full Plains and Mistlands toolkit.

Among its building uses, Black metal is especially important for storage and advanced Mistlands machinery. The Black metal chest is a straightforward furniture item, while the Eitr refinery and Sap extractor are key progression stations tied to Mistlands resource processing. The metal is also part of defensive and offensive structures such as the Ballista and Trap.

In practical terms, Black metal is best treated as a high-value crafting material rather than a general-purpose stockpile. Since it cannot be teleported, players usually want to process Black metal scrap near a Blast furnace and then transport the finished bars by cart, ship, or other non-portal route.
