Overview

Lox are large, aggressive creatures found in the Plains. They resemble a bulky mix of lizard and ox, covered in shaggy brown fur and reptilian skin. They are among the toughest creatures in the biome: they have very high health, deal heavy damage, and are resistant to blunt and slash damage. Because of this, swords and most maces do little against them, while spears, atgeirs, and arrows are more effective. Their size also makes them awkward in tight terrain, where they can be outmaneuvered more easily than many other enemies.

A wild Lox becomes hostile as soon as it is approached, so stealth and distance are useful. Lox have poor sight and hearing, which makes sneaking up on them easier than their intimidating size suggests. They also attack while swimming, making them dangerous near water, for swimmers, and for ships. Their melee kit is simple but dangerous: a bite with short reach and a stomp attack that hits in an area and is used as their opening move. The stomp can project damage forward farther than expected, so shallow ditches are not always enough to protect structures on the far side.

Lox can be tamed by feeding them Cloudberries. Because they tend to remain in herds and return to the same locations, players can tame large groups by repeatedly moving through the Plains and scattering berries where they gather. It is also possible to sneak up on single Lox or smaller groups and feed them directly. Keeping stamina above 50 is recommended so you can escape if discovered. For safer taming, a simple shelter with a Portal can be used to enter the Plains and keep the area active while taming takes place. Once tamed, Lox are often attacked by Deathsquitos and Fulings instead of the player, but unattended animals can still die if the area remains dangerous at night or during invasions.

Tamed Lox can also be bred and used as mounts. They will breed when they are happy and well fed with Cloudberries, Flax, or Barley, another Lox is within 8 meters, there are no more than 4 Lox within 20 meters, and they are not under a roof with a ceiling too low to move and eat comfortably. After mating, pregnancy lasts at least two minutes, and the baby Lox takes 1 hour and 40 minutes to mature. If you want to house them indoors, enough vertical clearance is needed; about 10 meters or more is recommended.

To ride a Lox, craft a Lox Saddle and equip it while standing close to the creature. While mounted, the player controls movement by turning the camera rather than using directional keys, and the Lox moves only forward or at a sprint. It cannot reverse. A ridden Lox is extremely powerful: it keeps its durability, ignores the rider’s carried weight, and is not slowed by armor. It has 240 stamina, which drains as it sprints, and its Riding skill improves both speed and stamina efficiency. Stamina regenerates slowly compared to the player’s, especially when hungry. Weapons cannot be used while mounted, since attacking immediately dismounts the player, but a full-speed Lox can trample most creatures for heavy damage, and it will still attack nearby enemies when not moving.

Lox drop Lox Pelt, Lox Meat, and occasionally a Lox Trophy. Lox meat is a strong early food source, and Lox-based recipes are especially valuable because Lox can be tamed and bred instead of hunted one by one. Haldor has a tamed Lox named Halstein in his camp, and Hildir has two tamed Lox named Blåbär and Hallon.
