Overview

Zil & Thungr is an aggressive duo miniboss found in the Plains inside the Sealed Tower. They are the first creatures in Valheim designed to fight as a pair, with Thungr serving as the melee combatant and Zil acting as the magical support attacker. In practice, the encounter combines close-range pressure with ranged elemental attacks, making positioning and line of sight the key parts of the fight.

Thungr attacks with a club in short-range arcs and has two main melee patterns: a regular swing and a delayed swing, both threatening players near him every few seconds. He can also use a rage attack, slamming the club into the ground three times while stepping forward. Zil fights from Thungr’s neck and fires fireballs that inflict Burning, and he can also cast a protective barrier that covers nearby allies and negates up to 100 damage before breaking or expiring. Zil’s barrier can make both bosses effectively invulnerable for a time, so it is usually best to wait for it to fade before committing to an attack.

The most reliable way to defeat them is with ranged weapons such as bows. A common tactic is to shoot arrows or Eitr from the bottom of the spiral staircase, then run up the stairs before Zil & Thungr can reach you, repeating the process until Thungr falls. Once Thungr is dead, Zil is left alone and reverts to the attack pattern of a regular Fuling Shaman, which makes the second phase much easier to manage. If fighting Zil in melee, it is best to wait out his elemental attacks on the stairs and then move in for a few quick strikes immediately afterward.

  • Zil & Thungr are the first duo creatures in Valheim.
  • Although they are intended to be fought together, they can be spawned separately because of their internal IDs.
  • Zil’s internal ID is GoblinShaman_Hildir.
  • Thungr’s internal ID is GoblinBrute_Hildir.
  • Zil drops Hildir’s bronze chest.
  • Zil can still cast elemental attacks while swimming.
  • According to their trophy descriptions, Zil is older than Thungr even though he is smaller.
  • The two are described as envying each other: Zil envies Thungr’s strength, while Thungr envies Zil’s magical power.
  • The pair may have been inspired by Master Blaster from Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.
