The dead fear silver. Remind them why.

Overview

Frostner is a silver-tier one-handed mace in Valheim, obtained after reaching the swamp-to-mountain progression and buying Ymir Flesh from Haldor. It is one of the strongest mid-to-late game blunt weapons because it combines physical damage with Frost and Spirit damage, giving it excellent crowd control and strong performance against enemies that are vulnerable to those effects.

Its standard attack is a three-hit combo, with the third strike dealing double damage. The secondary attack is a slower overhead blow that deals 2.5× damage and causes a heavier stagger. The weapon is especially useful when you want to control groups rather than simply burst down a single target, since the frost effect slows enemies and the blunt portion can still stagger them. The knockback can make focused target damage awkward in a group fight, so the secondary attack is often better for finishing an enemy off than repeatedly using the primary combo.

Frostner’s damage profile makes it unusual among maces. The Frost damage is applied immediately even though its slowing effect persists over time, while the Spirit damage is dealt over time and only affects some enemies. Its frost component also interacts strongly with the Wet status, making it particularly effective against enemies standing in water or otherwise soaked. Because frost damage does not contribute to staggering, Frostner can appear to stagger less often than other maces even when it is dealing high total damage. Its Spirit damage is also useful against certain undead and ghostly enemies.

The weapon has a visual Frost Aura, but this aura is cosmetic only and does not provide an additional gameplay effect. Frostner’s appearance is loosely based on depictions and archaeological interpretations of Mjölnir, Thor’s one-handed hammer.

To craft Frostner, the recipe is unlocked once all required materials have been obtained at least once. It requires a level 3 forge. The base crafting cost is:

Upgrading Frostner increases its durability and Frost damage, while its blunt and Spirit damage remain unchanged. At maximum quality, its durability reaches 350, with Frost damage rising from 40 to 58 and Spirit damage staying at 20.

  • Quality 1: 200 durability, 35 blunt, 40 frost, 20 spirit
  • Quality 2: 250 durability, 35 blunt, 46 frost, 20 spirit
  • Quality 3: 300 durability, 35 blunt, 52 frost, 20 spirit
  • Quality 4: 350 durability, 35 blunt, 58 frost, 20 spirit

It also has solid defensive stats for a weapon, including strong block power and parry capability, making it a practical backup shieldless option when needed.
