Overview

The Iron mace is a one-handed blunt weapon in Valheim and the third mace-type weapon in its progression, coming after the Bronze Mace. It is a strong mid-game melee choice for enemies that are vulnerable to blunt damage, especially because it combines reliable combo attacks with a powerful alternate strike that can stun targets.

Its normal attack is a three-hit combo. The third hit deals double damage, making the full sequence more effective than the first two swings alone. The alternate attack is a slower, heavier backhand-style blow that deals 2.5x damage and also causes a strong stun effect. Both attacks have a high sneak-attack multiplier of 3x. The first attack uses 8 stamina, while the alternate attack uses 16 stamina.

The weapon has the following base combat stats:

  • Damage: 55 blunt
  • Knockback: 90
  • Backstab: 3x
  • Weight: 2.0
  • Movement speed penalty: -5%
  • Parry bonus: 2x
  • Block force: 30
  • Parry force: 42–63
  • Parry bonus and block values improve with upgrades

At quality 1 through 4, the Iron mace increases its blunt damage from 55 / 61 / 67 / 73 and durability from 200 / 250 / 300 / 350. Its block force also rises with upgrades, reaching 45 at quality 4. Repair level remains 2.

Crafting the Iron mace requires a forge and an early-game recipe unlock condition: all crafting materials must have been in the inventory at least once, and a level 2 forge is required to make it available. The base recipe is:

Upgrades cost only Iron after the first level:

  • Quality 2: 10 Iron
  • Quality 3: 20 Iron
  • Quality 4: 30 Iron

The Iron mace is especially useful as a dependable one-handed weapon for players who want a shield-friendly blunt option. Its combination of solid base damage, strong knockback, and a hard-hitting alternate attack makes it effective for controlling enemies in close quarters. The alternate strike is slower, but its damage and stun make it ideal for opening against tougher targets or interrupting foes that can be staggered.
